Highly-Recommended Mods and Texture Packs

I really recommend that everyone get these two things:
OptiFine
PhotoRealistic Texture Pack

You'll need to install these on a clean installation of Minecraft, so just redownload it and archive your old minecraft folder within the Application Support folder.

Repeticraft. Shameless plug because I worked on this (HINT: I did like two item textures), but my friend did the most of it.
Also, I fail to see the appeal in HD textures. With all the blockyness of the game, trying to mask that with 512x512 textures seems... strange to say the least.

I tried the water shader, but it's incompatible with OptiFine, just like it says on the forum page.
