I'm at 20,000 - 0 now, and as I was waiting for the chunks to update, I got my third java exception error...
Either you are groping for answers, or you are asking God and listening to Jesus.
Re: Exploring
So when I log in today, I start at -175, -447, right near the new bridge. And I die. And I ask why. Because I left myself at 20,000, 0.
So I tried exploring again in a different direction, but it gave me an internal socket error again.
I tried testing this on my local singleplayer game, and ended up using up all 1 gig of the allocated memory after flying about 8000 world units in a single direction. The game didn't crash, but lagged tremendously.

Re: Exploring
..... Thanks for doubling the mapsize?
Not really, but flying in one direction is sort of destructive to the server. 20,000 is a pretty long way to go. More then 15x the distance I have traveled for my base.
Also, I have noticed terrible lag problems just flying from my base to spawn, even though I fly the same path every time, so it shouldn't have to generate too many new chunks. Flying too fast causes the map to stop loading at the right spot, and then you sort of hover in the air until it loads past you and you realized you flew into a wall.
Mono can maybe say what's up with the teleporting though.

Re: Exploring
Is it lagging the server too terribly? I was kicked by Monoman because I set up a macro to make me fly in one direction all night... at a normal-ish speed this time, so the chunks would load and not throw a java socket error.
I'm at X: -43,477 Y: 130 Z: 3.8 now, but I plan to continue in this direction until maybe -50,000... unless it really lags the server.
