So I caved and updated to 1.9Pre4

I have had some interesting ideas regarding a large transport system using railcarts. Basically, every certain number of blocks (I'm thinking 1024 or 512, need to test that) there is a large tower. This acts as the hub for that area. The main hub is on the spawn at 0,0. It has minecart tracks that run in each direction (N, W, S, E). It is a linear track all the way to the next hub. In the end this makes a grid. It sounds simple enough, but I'm trying to add more convenient features to it.

Features:
Halfway across each track is a small substation which allows either through or stop traffic, determined by the traveler at the initial station. I'm currently working on a way to have a signal travel the length of the track in the same chunk as the rider, otherwise I dont think it will carry the entire distance. Also, it should be able to handle carts that are traveling in the wrong direction.

Anyway, the idea is to make it easier to travel quickly around the map without having to walk. Having the tracks at the ceiling means there is plenty of space to build anyway.

Now that I think about it, moving the cart system to the Nether would make travel 8 times faster, and the station would have to take up no more space then a room with a portal. 1024 blocks becomes 128, which may be too short to put a substation in. Or hell, maybe 1024 blocks is too big for the server already. Perhaps this entire setup isn't useful, but if I'm gonna build anything in Minecraft, it has to have some sort of function.

I'm better with water than with railways, and I feel that water is more efficient, easier to make, and quite resource friendly, and can be about the same speed as a mine cart. I like your idea however, maybe start on it when 1.9 actually comes out so our server wouldn't need to be reset or whatever.

We can build Taxi a Venice! With canals instead of roads!

EATS was a great system. But I think even Ethos gave up after a while. All the updates broke the way water works. Also, while it works extremely well offline, the SMP one I made was less-then great. In fact, it only worked for about 10 blocks length.

While I love the idea of working with water, it is actually far more resource intensive, as you need 3 blocks for one block of water where you need 1 for a rail. Also, 1 block drop is required for every 8 blocks you travel, and water elevators are harder to make now. Minecarts are also much better on SMP, they deal with lag much better. Also, minecarts have the option of activating things as they pass by, and they can move vertically with ease. The only reason EATS existed was because minecarts at the time were slower if you didn't use the boosting glitch (which semi-worked on SMP). With the addition of booster rails, I think there isn't a practical reason to return to water anymore. Visually appealing, yes. Practical, not really.

Though we should totally build a Venice-style area. I would definitely rejoin the server to build something like that. We just need to find a huge ocean biome, go out into the middle and create 10x10 (maybe slightly bigger or lower) platforms separated by 3-4 block canals of water. It would be arranged in a grid more or less. Once we are done mapping out the platforms and bridges, then we could start work on the actual buildings. Then we could keep building outwards until we end up with Tenochtitlan.

Venice having canals instead of roads is a stereotype? O.o Damn, those are some pretty fluid roads.

If it makes you feel any better Taxi, we can make a giant statue of Jesus on a hill. But with sunglasses. And guns. And terminator-style robotics. Hell yeah. Super Mega Death Christ 2000 B.C. Version 4.0 BETA. Thats what we need.

To spice up your roads we could add... uh... I'll get back to you on that. Yeah.

What if we remake the Cristo Redentor, but we use Monoman instead? That would be pretty cool actually.

Oh yeah... Forgot that you could do that. Just... Tunnel through at the adminium level and there you go... Hell, you could actually tunnel UNDER the adminium level. It has 5 layers, so bottom is ice, two air blocks and then the ceiling, with an extra adminium layer on top for good measure. Or maybe there should be adminium under the ice... Wouldn't want anyone to fall into the void.

Damn, it's a record! And I think I'll start planning out Venice in Creative. Or... I could just use a schematic of the REAL Venice. O.o

Ah, I love Etho's videos and his ideas. Also, he had this idea whereby you could travel by boat underwater with half-slabs. Very resource friendly and the only downside to that is that it has to be underwater.

I do like the Venice-style idea though.
