How I Organize My Computer And How It Can Help You

Post by Candy » Sat Nov 14, 2009 9:15 am

I'm just gonna show you how I organize my computer, I'm pretty happy with it, no overloading desktops and its pretty nice : >
Image
Dock:
Okay the dock is a main part of your screen. I like no magnification cause its a real pain. Hiding is just annoying because it shows up again and again when a lot of the times you don't want it to. The left side works for me cause not much stuff is there, compared to the right where most desktop folders are kept unless you change it. I keep mine a decent size so its easy to see stuff.
Edgies:
Probably the first thing you notice is the little tabs sticking out of the side. For me they are a better version of stickies, the standard one they give you is sorta boring. Therefore I use edgies, they let the notes stick out of the side instead of full size they can be minimized and stuff. You have to pay 10 bucks for it, the demo puts up annoying pop-ups saying get the buy the real thing but after a while it stoped doing it. It has a lot of features such as putting a folder in a sticky so that when you click it you go directly to it.

Small folders:
I enjoy small folders and a zap to grid function, you can keep it strait and nice.
Apps on my dock:
I'm pretty sure you know what some of them are, but most of them are strange, some are school apps. The one you can make out best is iTunes. I changed the icon. You can change it simply by going to information and replacing it but the app CandyBar makes life easier.

It is a demo but the pop-ups for buying the real thing are small.

Currently I am working on a number of things so I will not be posting pictures of my desktop but here is how I have mine setup:

Main Display:
* Adium is open always with a minimal style buddy-list and chat window.
* Geektool display of time, calendar events, todos, weather
* Max of 4 icons on my desktop at any time, these will consist of projects I am working on at the moment.
What else can be on this display:
- Safari windows (research/browsing)
- mail
- iCal
- iTunes

Second Display:
* my rightside dock is on this display, I am running snow leopard and have minimize to dock turned on so I don't have document clutter because I have an insane about of windows open when I am working.
* whatever I am working on in max size for the screen.

If I am working with Xcode, then my coding window/project manager will be on the second display, interface building UI will be on the main display, with the IB toolbars and palettes on the second display. When testing projects I have the console display on the main as well as the application itself.

There are some neat controls for editing your mac in MacPilot its a fun program to mess around with settings it basically lets you access hidden features that nubs (like Me) with no programming skills can turn on and off with ease.

For me, I also like having the dock on the side, and I try to minimize the vertical size of it (well, it depends with how many apps are on it for the computer I'm using). I'm also not a fan of dock hiding. I try to organize my files and try to put them in appropriate places, and I believe that the Desktop is usually never such a place, so I usually don't have any files or folders or anything on my Desktop. If I have a lot of screen space on the computer I'm working on, I'll leave a bunch of applications open and visible like Dirk does, otherwise I'll use application hiding a lot. Folder icon sizes don't really matter to me because I use column view in Finder most of the time.
I am no longer active to Halo or MGM, and don't guarantee a response on the forums or through email. I will however linger around the discord room for general chatting. It's been fun!
