My iMac G5 is probably deceased.

My iMac G5 has gone through some hard times over the past three years with refusing to turn on (which stopped last year). Today, it's making these weird scan lines and is refusing to display the log in window, forcing me to have to force it to shut down.

It is a hardware problem because I tried booting from the Mac OS X 10.5 Install disk and it also causes the same problem. Booting from Single-User mode only gives the scanlines, but the UNIX Kernel is still intact.

Specifications:

Mac OS X 10.5.8
iMac G5 1.6GHz
512MB DDR SDRAM

Age: 6-7 years old.

Yeah, I recommend you get rid of that G5. My old one still works but we never use it since its a power hog.

Target disk mode still works. I'm not getting rid of the G5 until I get a new Macintosh.

It was a good computer.

R.I.P. iMac G5

~2003-2011

edit:
Would anyone like to say anything?

I'll start:

It's disproportionate fans would spin at a high velocity when the iMac was struggling to think with its PowerPC processor trying to run Leopard with only a sole 512MB of RAM. It always did that right after the moment I logged in. It would always play Nexuiz really laggy and didn't quite run Swordedit correctly. Everyone has their malfunctions, even computers and operating systems. Why did Windows Vista have so many bugs with its new content? But, it had many good things to it too, like how it could play Halo Demo at amazing speed, how it could work with Eschaton to create mods, and how it could test those mods, too. It was a great computer, but sadly, everything ends. And so, the iMac passed away, right on the table, letting go of the dying life it clenched on to. It lived a long life, longer than many other iMac G5's of its model. It will fade away, but never be forgotten.

O.O Holy crap man, upgrade that thing... All of my computers at my house are maxed out RAM. My old G5 had 8 GB...

Check all the Leopard requirements... you are just scraping by with 512 mb of RAM...

What... the... hell? My autistic brother started up the machine and it's working. I'm going to use one of the bootable CD's to check if there's anything wrong with hardware.

Most likely. I didn't break a single rule with spamming. I put my spam where it belonged, and that's probably the karma that made the iMac work again.

edit: diagnostics tell nothing is wrong, but that's bull. It acted up after it went onto Memory, giving random dots and occasionally scanlines all over the screen. Maybe that's what's wrong?

another edit: I got a new HP Pavilion for now. It's quite fast on 4GB of RAM.

512 MB of RAM is definitely too low, but I bet you've never even used/needed 4 GB of your RAM on your old G5. No point in upgrading now anyway when buying a new computer makes more sense.
