Contrail Transparency

How do I change the transparency of a projectile's contrail? I tried editing it in Gimp, but that does not seem to change anything.

Bitmaps
Change the Alpha I believe to a lighter level
Then again That might just make the contrail lighter looking

Raise the alpha of the color in meta.

Which plugin should I have set for the meta editor? It currently says there is none.
