Score Counter?

Post by Snow » Wed Apr 04, 2007 2:43 am

Here's a noob question. I've been learning all I can with hex editting and and researching both demo and PC trial modding and still don't know if this is possible: can you change how you score in a game in CTF gametype? I simply want to know if it's possible with all the current means to mod the Mac demo.

An explanation of why:
I'm working on a mod on the side that I'd say is cool but might be seen as stupid to some. HOG SOCCER! It's a mod where CTF is turned into a soccer game. Rather than playing with flags, both teams must shoot (at) the ball (a warthog in center of the map) to the opposing team's base. If it touches a base, it counts as a score, and the sound clip "___ team scores" plays (I know how to access the clips in hex). I'll be satisfied if the score shows up in the stats and that it can trigger the sound clip.

I'm sure the flag base would have to be edited to stretch beyond the base walls. After that I dunno.

Players use a pistol and shotgun to punt or kick the hog. Both weapons are high powered and the shotgun can be used to rocket jump. A player can jump up in the air and intercept a flying hog and 'kick' it back. Everyone is invincible except for melee from behind.

I started this mod last year, but post secondary really puts a damper on side projects. This is only really for fun, I decided to pick it up again. Anyway, I really don't know if this mod is even possible. One thing that I find nice about this idea is that it can still be smoothly played with a high ping... well say max 400. You're shooting at a hog, so no need for headshots.

If anyone else wants to beat me to creating a hog soccer mod, heh go right ahead. I want to play it, which I why I'm making it. I just wanted an alternative way to play in the gulch. It would be kinda like a wind down or a break from hours of pwning or noobing like I do cuz I have wireless >.<.

I have a placement map, just ask. A lot of work still needs to be done besides the scoring system, such as a bit of physics and speed altering to smooth out play.

For a long time I didn't want to ask here in fear of looking and sounding like a noob, and especially since I'm not known or haven't released any mods online. I did do my research tho and maybe someone here knows something I still don't.

I was hoping for a short post lol. Thanks for your time and any advice or help is appreciated.

Or instead, you could use the oddball, since thats easier, and make weapons that shoot high to low power explosive rounds. But you would have to cover the entire base in CTF score zones and make the flag have all addball attributes (because it will still count as a flag anyway). This sounds pretty easy in CE, because you can make giant trigger areas (some can even "teleport" vehicles by moving them to a different location when they move into the trigger area) that could possibly be used for CTF scoring. Although, I bet with maybe some people's help, and some sparkediting, you could do it.

It will work on halo 2 vista but not on any other halo due to the limitations on the Blam!1 engine which would be halo 1 engine unless ur were able to completely reverse engineer and create a program that can help support it. (If you look at the documentary of the halo 2 vista new versions of hek, guerilla, and sapien.)

Halo 2 vista i believe is an enhanced version of the blam!2 engine (does not make it blam!3 that be halo 3) which gives the possibilities of creating new things like your idea.

Thanks for the replies so far, and that's a good suggestion Draconic. I know a bit about CE and could only dream of porting the gulch to CE, mod the triggers and port it back. It IS possible afik and I believe there is only ONE person who knows how to do it for PC trial and Mac Demo. I could be totally wrong. Cuz that was one idea. And if the "touching bases" didn't work then I could literally set up goal posts with trigger flags as boundry. I'm also not sure if sparkedit can stretch triggers, but by now it should.

If the Blam!1 engine would have to be reverse engineered just to be able to affect scores then there is another way, but it would involve a * t - blank*. And I'd rather keep *t - blank* away from Halo as it would open doors to cheating. It would also mean that there would literally have to be a singe score keeper always present during the game.

I pondered a much more simpler and analog way of keeping score earlier today and it would ensure fairness as the whole team on either side is responsible for the "score counter".

Basically just use a foosball table scoring system. I'd have to import a set up that allows you to slide 3 - 5 objects from on side to another (like the way an abacus works). The models I can make.. I'm a Wings3d master. The objects would have to be seperate from the structure holding them, but still be slidable, even if that means you have to shoot them to move one. Best would be a cage where the seperate slider objects are spawned and trapped in. This would also mean only 2 to 6 scenery objects would have to be replaced, depending. The individual sliders' respawn time would also have to be stretched to as long as the game time.

Then just place an abacus score counter thing (or rather collection of loose individual objects) close to each base (but not in the way). They can't be ugly or giant tho, cuz then this mod just starts getting rediculous lol, if not crazy already.

And, even with this it may still be possible to get the "___ team scores" sound clip to play when the hog hit's a 'goal'. I was thinking about methods for this too. Maybe some tricky collision model and sound event work there. At least with the sound clip, it would be hard to contest the goal as long as only the hog can initiate it.

But, yeah. Everyone's cramming that foosball table at school. Keeping score this way is just a matter of honour and trust. I'll just have to be sad that the end results won't show up in the Stats at the end of the game.
