Sample Grass:

How it looks in-game (resized to 512x512, in order to fit the existing grass bitmap):

I'm about halfway through the images; then it's sounds, which should be rather straightforward since I was able to test it earlier.

Release of Alpha (bitmaps only)! This release has only bitmaps, not the foley sounds, but does not include an ice texture or some further varieties of water and wood that are coming with the final release.

This is to get you all going with the competition sooner. You may use any resources from the collection in your mods, because it's a public release here at MGM and over at HDM.

It's a CE map with only the new bitmaps internalized, to save a bit of space while keeping it inside a map file.

To use the tags, scroll down in the bitm section until you see something like this:
Image

Then, extract the bitmap tag(s) you want --- most are 1024x1024 --- and import them into your modded map file for Halo Demo.
Have fun!

This is a newly found place that has exsisted for billions of years. the grass should be way longer.

With the sizes of the bitmaps, you can always "double it up" by editing the image and making it 1/2 the size, then pasting it so it's actually 1/4 the size (does that make sense?).

Anyway, I'm including a new version that has some nice combination examples involving pretty much every texture in the map related to scenery and terrain (besides the leaves on the trees and the smaller foliage). The related bitmaps are internalized, so it's easy to go wild experimenting with this one.

Download the Example map

Example Screenshots are below. Here, you see thin grass, sandy pavement, and granite stone canyon walls. The bases mostly use aluminum on top, weathered steel variations on the sides, and have cinderblock flooring. You can see the new wood tree texture.

Wow that ground looks amazing.

And the floor of the base.

Do want.

Thanks to O'Mally for testing the footstep sounds with me. You can hear other players' foosteps from up to 12 world units away. The footstep sounds are soft, so it just means that you will rarely be snuck up on without an audible warning of a player's footsteps. You can only hear the footsteps of others if other loud sounds like shooting and driving are absent.

Soon, I'll be adding a visual representation of the footprints in snow, so you can follow other players' footprints in the snow, grass, and dirt. These will be cleared away after a buffer in a similar manner to bullet holes, but unlike tire tracks, probably. I also have some real tire tracks in grass and dirt (but not snow :\ ).

Bases are made out of limestone now?
Also change the environment, snow looks so out of place in that sun.

It's a preview >.<

Anyway, after untold hours (probably at least 10) of tweaking and nonsensicalizing, I was able to give the spartan two left feet, in almost random directions, as the following:

... :(

Sorry that you can't see any of the detail in-game, but i did my best and got lucky almost in getting it to work decently.

Yeah, they don't orientate to the direction of the player. you would have to do a vague circular mushy thing instead.

Latest screenshot of working version (note: filesize is significantly larger now, due to included sky bitmaps):

Download: eh... well, not really worth it, I think. Waiting until later.

Update: I'm on the sounds now, and it's really easy (that is, straightforward). After spending lots of time testing the snow footsteps, I made one try with the concrete footsteps and they sound great! You guys are gonna love this... these sounds are amazing :D

Cool, I guess you're using CE? Also are you going to make different sounds for your snow and non-snow versions? This is all looking pretty good right now. I actually have something similar I've been working on for a while that might be getting closer to a release.

Yes, I'm using the Halo Editing Kit to make the new bitmaps and tags. Bitmaps are usually 1024x1024 and sounds usually have multiple permutations. The sounds are paired with their bitmaps usually -- so I recorded a footstep sound after taking a picture of a material.

Some bitmaps I compiled (oh what a fancy-sounding word, no? ...roigl roigl... ((that's rolling over in grave laughing))) as interface bitmaps, which are handled as 2D images but without the power-of-two requirement. Of course, certain animation features don't work probperly with these bitmaps, so you might have issues with getting the cloud bitmaps to function as moving clouds in the sky. Come to think of it, I should release two sets of sky/cloud bitmaps, then...

Anyway, so yeah. (Um, what was the purpose of this paragraph again?) O_)
EDIT:
...ah yes, this stuff takes a long time!
