Bitmaps, and they're usually the ones with the same name as the scenario file. They should look pretty screwed up with lots of orange/white checkered patterns.

I was wondering what those were for. What can you do with them? What do they do? Do they affect the position of light on the bsp's textures?

Pretty much, it controls all the light position that the original radiosity made.

If you darken the image it actually makes the map darker. I've never actually tried that with the bitmap demo but it should work.

There was only one picture and when i made it darker it only made the cliff darker.

The picture should look like this:
Editing it won't alter the ground so much but it should make the actual play space darker. It's kind of weird when it's "dark" by lighting standards but certain bitmaps like the sky and the ground don't reflect it.

I remember in the CE tutorials I've read that you have to 'fix' or create the light maps when you make a new map in 3ds. It's one of those mandatory steps that, if you skip, will make your screen look all black in the game (or some comparable annoyance).

Yes, like I said lightmaps are the position of light on the map that the original radiosity made.
That step in CE is: Open the map in Spien
Hit the "~" key.
Type in : radiosity_quality 1
hit enter, then: radiosity_start
wait a long time and then type in: radiosity_save
All done, you now have a lightmap.
