Mod Manager

Post by Monoman » Sat Apr 01, 2006 10:27 pm

What do you guys think about a program that manages all of your mods?

The program would display a list of mods that are inactive and display the mod that is currently active. The program would allow you to activate and deactivate mods by pressing a button.

lol, isnt it just as easy to switch the maps?

And wouldnt the application just switch the maps? Plus, it would have to rename each one bloodgulch.map and then rename the active one to something else.

I'm not totally sure what you have in mind, but it seems sort of...unneeded

Thats why I was asking, to see if anyone would be interested in it, if it would be worth doing.

The program would do everything that everyone already does when they switch mods. Nothing new, maybe an easier setup for noobs.

If I made it, I would make it work something like this:
You put (or the program does) all your mods in one folder (with nothing but .map's).
Then you choose which one is the original and it puts that somewhere.

You choose a mod and it copies it over to your maps folder.

I would use it if it has a button that let you copy the same mod you have set currently (again), so I could just save my changes then click a button and start up Halo!
(It's a pain in the butt having to show the two folders, copy the map over to the maps folder, say yes to "blahblah do you want to replace?", then waiting for it to copy)

If it were done that way, the names of the mods could be done by the names of the files since you wouldn't be able to have 100 maps with the same name in one folder.

Again, what language would it be made in? C(++)? Applescript? Java?

Disabler, I'm probably going to do the program in Java.

copy + replace you mean disabler? That wouldnt work just like that because you would also need to have the file name reset to bloodgulch.map, not the mod name.

Also, it could easily be done in Applescript and an application made in InterfaceBuilder. Gah, I cant work on it though because I'm on a vacation.

Basicly I think it would work best like this:
  • 1. Finds all .map files on your HardDrive.
    2. Swaps/copies the file to the Maps folder and renames the file.
    3. Has an easy selector (no clue how that would work though)
    4. Shows most selected files first.
It really seems though like it would be easier still just to do it manually. Also, it would take up a lot less RAM and CPU to do that.

So are you saying with this program, we are going to be able to combined all of our maps together? Holy crap. If that is what you mean, then, I think it is a splended idea. Hah!

What did he mean by that?

Basically, when you have a lot of mods, it gets hard to keep track of them all right? And it becomes a pain to constantly have to be copying and replacing and renaming maps. This program would allow you to 'turn on' mods with a few clicks of the button instead of a whole lengthy procedure.

**Stunned in asstonashment**. That would be VERY cool. I hate having all of these folders... I have like, 23 folders and they are just maps... I have a lot more that have readmes and information on how to mod certain things... It gets tiring after a while... That would be cool Monoman. You should definitly make that. Ha!. Alright. Peace.
