Are you fucking kidding me??
Try making ANYTHING with transparency AT ALL in PS and saving
as a jepg and see the white-filled crap that comes out. This signature is a PNG. Want to know what it would look like had a saved as a jpeg? A solid white rectangle with a black box plus text. No cool splatters of varying opacity. Zero. Pngs are essential for anyone who uses photoshop or any other design app seriously.
Also, jpegs are notorious for leaving artifacts and fucking over smooth gradients. The only advantage for jpgs is that they are about 25% smaller file size, and unless you are making freeway ad-sized images, you won't notice a benefit.
Also, ARE YOU KIDDING? I have a huge photobucket library and I ddont think I have a single jpg. ALL PNGS. It works great with them, really fast uploads.
And I have Leopard too, what's so special?

It simply allows you to choose. If you want a backgound you can add one (of any color, you arent stuck with white). If you dont, leave it transparent. It simply saves your creation exactly how it was made, no quality decreases, no background if you didnt add one, etc.
I have to go to bed in 3 minutes, and I want this put to rest. Everyone get it? Good? See you tomorrow.

Thanks! Not helping my head side.
Backgrounds can be removed in a number of ways. First, you have to unlock the layer so you delete material. Do this by right clicking on the layer if he layer is locked, and hitting duplicate layer. Then delete the original (locked) layer.
There are a number of ways to delete a background after that point. All involve selecting the area you want to delete and clearing it by hitting the delete button. If it is a soild color background, you can use this trick:
Go select>Color Range... Then use the sampler to select tv background color. Set the fuzziness high and viola the backgroundhas been selected and it is simple to delete it.
Then save as a PNG ;D
