HOW TO FIX HALO DEMO
Hello, and welcome to this new edition of Halo Demo Troubleshooting. Due to the dawn of the age of Intel based Macintosh computers, PPC based computers are becoming obsolete, and many users will find that they need to upgrade. Unfortunately, the Demo version of Halo was never designed or patched to function on these new Intel processors. Because of this, many people may be encountering some glitches with playing Halo, the most major of these being an inability to host servers and other assorted graphical issues arising during game play. This tutorial was designed to help people with new Macintoshs resolve the problems that they are likely to encounter in the Halo Demo. Enjoy.
Step One: Halo Demo and you
The reason why you are here, I presume, is because Halo is doing odd things. Please note, that at this time, many of the problems that occur in Halo Demo because of an upgrade are incurable until such time that Apple releases a patch that makes the graphic card work right with Halo Demo.
Step Two: Resolving Graphical Errors
• The Intel Integrated Graphics GMA 950 and Halo Demo.
For those users who may have purchased a new Mac Mini, or have a computer with Intel Integrated Graphics, you may have the possibility of Halo Demo not functioning when run in Windowed mode. This can easily be fixed by running in full screen.
• Fixing the "white box radar" glitch, commonly caused by using NVIDIA graphics cards. (Tutorial is courtesy of Fuel.)
If you are using an Intel Mac that uses an NVIDIA graphics card, it is very likely that you will get the "white box radar" glitch. This can be fixed with a few simple dependency swaps in your bloodgulch.map file. The white radar glitch appears like this:
To fix the white radar glitch, do the following:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
! Warning: The following tutorial requires the modification of the
Halo Demo bloodgulch.map file. You will need to posses Altimit's Eschaton modding tool
along with an understanding of how to apply and play Halo Demo mods.
Take care when modifying the bloodgulch.map file, or you may permanently damage the file.
Always back up the contents of your Maps folder in case of such an event! !
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. First off, go to matg in the dependency swapper using Eschaton.
2. Change HUD Sweeper and HUD Sweeper Mask to ui\shell\bitmaps\black
3. Close Eschaton. The white radar glitch should now be fixed.
• Fixing the Black Base Glitch. (Special thanks to Teh Slapz and G[v]N for finding this fix.)
On most Mac computers with a GeForce8 graphics card, the bases in bloodgulch may appear to be solid black. This can be fixed by modding your bloodgulch.map file. Again, be sure to back up the original bloodgulch.map file just in case anything goes wrong.
1. Open bloodgulch.map with a hex editor.
2. Find A576E0 (Offset of levels\b30\bitmaps\metal scratches)
3. After some 80 00 80 00's or so, you'll see a 08 00 00 00
4. The 08 is the number of mipmap levels
5. Change the 8 char to 6
6. Save and enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------
Un-resolvable Graphical Errors:
The following problems caused on an Intel Mac, however, are currently incurable:
• Shaders not appearing correctly, even with Maxed Rendering Pipeline.
• Messed up shadows.
Fortunately, these incurable glitches have some possibility of being resolved, pending further updates to your graphics card's software released by Apple.
Step Three: Fixing Problems Hosting:
Most users of Halo Demo may find that they are unable to host any longer once they upgrade to an Intel Mac. 7 times out of 10 this is due to your computer's firewall blocking incoming connections under Halo Demo. I have compiled a quick tutorial on how to allow Halo Demo through the firewall.
On Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6 (Leopard/Snow Leopard):
First off, go to your System Preferences.
Now go to the Security section.
Now go to the Firewall tab.
The setting should currently be on "Only allow essential services". Apparently, Halo Demo is not deemed as essential. You should now select the option "Allow access for specific services and applications". Once that is selected, press the + icon.
Navigate to your Halo Demo launcher, and click "Add"
Halo Demo should now be added to the list, and you should be able to host again!
Done!
!! Important !!
If the Halo Demo app is greyed out in the "Add Application" part, simply do the following:
1. Find the Halo Demo app launcher on your Hard Drive.
2. Click on it once and press + I.
3. Click on the Name & Extensions menu.
4. In the text box, add ".app" to the end. Normally it will say just "Halo Demo". Now it should say "Halo Demo.app".
5. The Firewall should now allow Halo Demo to be selected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Mac OS X 10.3 / 10.4 (Panther / Tiger)
NOTE: THIS METHOD IS UNTESTED AND AWAITS CONFIRMATION. IF THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU, SIMPLY DELETE THE SETTING YOU CREATED!
Start off by opening the System Preferences
Next head over to the Sharing menu
Now click on the Firewall tab
Click on the button labeled "New"
In the drop down menu, select "Other".
In the TCP Port text box, type in 2302, 2303. These are the ports that Halo typically uses, by default it is 2302. Type whatever you want in the description box.
Done! If this does not work for you, simply select the setting you made, and press the "Delete" button. This method is currently awaiting confirmation.
Step Four: Conclusion
Well, I hope someone learns something from this. Please note that this tutorial is still incomplete, and if anyone has any comments, suggestions, or fixes regarding the issues outlined above, I will certainly add them.

D: The pics stretch the page. Kind of annoying scrolling over just to see what you wrote. >_< But yes, that should do it. Much easier. I'm looking forward to fixing the radar though, and I have seemingly contracted BBS. Which really sucks.
Re: Halo Demo Troubleshooting [11/25/08]
Is there any way to do this on Tiger? (10.4.11)
Re: Halo Demo Troubleshooting [11/25/08]
Sure, except I think the firewall settings are in "Sharing".

yeeeah! they're really nice features! aren't they?
