They don't have the rights to the game anymore, it is still owned by Microsoft or Gearbox.

Dirk, that's exactly what I said. I was referencing MS and gearbox and that point. They are the IP owners. It's their property and they can do what they want with it, including not giving it to anyone. Which is the point sparky. Even if they could be making money from it, and I'm not even convinced that there is a net profit for them, it's still their decision. And if they choose to just sit on it then that's their prerogative. They don't have to sell something if they don't want to and it's their choice.

Whatever. All I'm sayin is that if you feel bad, go ahead and give some money to a cause, so you're still losing the money you'd lose if you bought the game. It's the closest you can come to actually buying the game.

You are making a statement saying that the years of coding and testing and debugging is not worth anything to you. Torrents are not illegal. Just like FTP and other protocols are not illegal. However using those protocols to distribute copyrighted material without permission is illegal. And yes Halo is still copyrighted. In the US copyright can last either the life of the author plus 70 years or for a work for hire (e.g., those created by a corporation) then copyright persists for 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever is shorter. It's going to be awhile before Halo hits the public domain.
