There is a new method of uploading files at HDM now, inspired by Vegerot's suggestions.

New method:

1. Visit the upload page (http://upload.halodemomods.com/) and you'll notice it's new. You have three different methods of uploading files now.
2. Decide what method to use; if you are uploading a mod, do what it says there: make a new page with the title of your mod as the page title and add your mod as an attachment to that page.

The mod database is going to need some serious updating, as are all the uploaded mods...
If I make a new tab for uploaded files, that would be more sensitive towards previously uploaded files. The current method is to use the file attachment on each new page. I suppose this would work also.

I'm going to make the painstaking effort of creating a new page for each mod on the Mod Databases for Demo and Full.

Categories will be given based upon CSS, Multiplayer or Singleplayer, and Author Name.

For example:

[[Category: Multiplayer Mods]]
[[Category: CSS Mods]]
[[Category: Draconic74]]

I'm going to do the same with each Tool on the Tools page, for example:

[[Category: Hex Editors]]

... and these categories will be subcategories of [[Category: Mods]] and [[Category: Tools]].

In this way, we'll change HDM from a page database into a wiki.

EDIT:

First: I'd recommend starting with the important tools and the popular mods (e.g. Eschaton and Snow Gulch, respectively).

I finished parsing the Tools page into separate pages for each tool and categorizing each.

Next are the Tags, Tutorials and Mods. I'll be able to handle this all by myself, except that the Mod Database I'll probably need some help with after I've gotten it started.

Sparky great idea! I think we should have some of us provide a background for some of the more important ones that come straight from MGM. I think this will make the wiki seem more like a wiki rather than a database for downloading files....

There is a bug with the new upload system:

If you attach a file to a new page, which is the new method of publishing things at HDM, and then upload another file such as a screenshot using the old file upload page, that second file is also attached to the last page to which you attached a file. I might have to remove the old file upload page entirely so that this doesn't cause frustration.

EDIT:
Therefore, I changed the info on the HDM File Upload page: http://www.halodemomods.com/wiki/HDM:Upload_Files

I placed all the template code snippets for HDM pages on a single page called "Templates". You should familiarize yourself with the info there, which currently includes entries for what to put on database pages like the Mod Database and what to put on new pages for a mod or modding tool.

The HDM web server is using about 50% of its hard drive space now, which translates into about 50 GB of space used. Bandwidth is insignificant as usual. The memory limit has been raised from 20 MB to 200 MB. The memory limit for scripts was set at 20 MB as an experiment, where it was normally 100 MB before. That's why the server had been slow since about January. So now the web site will be more responsive and run more smoothly.

http://www.westhost.com/unmanaged-dedicated-servers/
I'll probably be upgrading to the $95 plan you see there, which includes a lot more memory and runs on a dedicated server to make HDM a much nicer experience overall.

With that upgrade, we should have no problem using the server to host dedicated server games and run scripts constantly. Right now, with our current setup, it would be alright to run a persistent script that uses <100 MB, which means a small script would be alright to have on the HDM server right now.

AID usually steps up to the large tasks where I don't, so it usually gets done. But it's a wiki and of course I welcome your help. Use the Templates page I linked a couple posts before.

Also, even though there is another topic for this already, the HDM server is running a script for nil's HaloMD game lobby. I wouldn't upgrade to another hosting plan unless we can get some dedicated server application or script running using the command-line (non-screen-based) unix system.
