Sparky's History

Post by Sparky » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:00 am

First, I joined the GameRanger community and was into Rogue Spear Demo and its modding when Monoman's "older" and "newer" sites were active. I think that started around the time that GameRanger came out - Monoman probably remembers the year (but I don't).

RSD dwindled as players on GameRanger converted to Ghost Recon and Ghost Recon Demo. Since I was in grade school and couldn't invest my money in new games, I decided to stick with RSD modding with Blade and a couple other buddies (Sephiroth Clock, Monoman, Pie...). Eventually, though, they all converted to GhRD and GhR.

I became an RSD mod reviewer for Mono's "newer" site in an attempt to set some arhival closure for the vast array of mods that had developed, and to perhaps revive the community, which didn't really happen. With only a 56k connection and having difficulty finding players to join games, I was only partially successful in my reviews. (You couldn't actually play the game until someone else joined who had the mod, which was completely different from the Halo series games. You can imagine my frustration, then. Luckily, the mod files were relatively small because they were mostly .txt files that were only about 40k at most.)

My attention then shifted from RSD to Unreal Tournament Demo, which is not at all conducive to modding (but you can use cheats to enhance the multiplayer gameplay). Thus, I left Monoman's forums for a couple years.

But I grew tired of that game, too (which seemed to be a recurring pattern), so I finally joined the GhR Demo community on GameRanger. But then Raven Shield came out, and most of Monoman's buddies who were still playing games switched over to that. But you can still find GhR/GhRD players on GameRanger. Fortunately, modding GhR/GhRD continued (it was as easy as modding RSD before), so there was variety to the demo's only multiplayer map, Castle. The player physics in GhRD were harder to handle than those in RSD, and were harder again in RvS, which still feels too cumbersome for me.

In 2004, Monoman asked a few of us to check out his new site, MacGamingMods.com. I thought it looked cool, and I remember complimenting him on the metal look that matched the OS X windows (Mac OS X was new then).

The Halo Demo forum seems to have grown very popular. I downloaded the demo at first because I thought Halo 2 for xbox was pretty fun (I didn't like Halo 1, though); also, I'd played Halo on a PC once when I visited over my friend's apartment (you know, one of those halo tournament get-togethers). It was only recently that joined the Halo Demo modding community.

Around 2008, I officially quit playing games. You can find my resignation post in the Halo Demo forum if you search for my username. But after graduating from college last semester, I now can dedicate more time and thought to modding Halo and Halo Demo, seeing how this game is still played alot. But as my signature might imply, I have a life aside from computer games and online forums. (My signature and Location complement each other!)

That is remarkably similar to my story... I joined essentially at the time the Halo Demo section was formed... my earliest post is on the second page, but I was watching earlier than that. I also have recently stopped gaming, but for different reasons... I simply had better things to do on the computer: graphic design. I dont even look at the Halo Demo page anymore, the only one I ever played (yes, I have played Full), and I was pretty kick-ass, but I simply dont give a shit anymore. I just stick around here for the community and the head-swelling respect I get :P

My story is like yours but turn it around. I started at halo then got all those other games and joined GameRanger. But I'd love to learn how to mod those games.
