Making crappy toy guns look awesome

Post by Noodle » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:26 am

I bought this random SMG toy some time ago. It used to click when you pressed the trigger, but it doesn't anymore. So I thought I'd make it look something worth holding.

The scope is from a dead hunting rifle-ish capgun, and the silencer is a gluestick. I'll paint the whole thing black today, so it resembles an MP5SD1. I plan on buying an AKS74U at the dollar store today. They sell these at like 5 bucks a piece.

This is the AK74 I was talking about, they sell these at dollar stores for 5 bucks a piece.

Ok, so that's a picture of a REAL airsoft gun I got off of google from the image search, but hey, it's still a toy.... kinda.

I'm not kidding, it's a near perfect model of an AKS74U (With a crappy army helmet. >.<) for 5 bucks. There's just a sticker and an orange tip to remove.

With a little dullcoat*, it can look quite a bit real.
*Dullcoat: A tool used in modeling to remove any shine caused by super clean plastic

Keep in mind federal law prohibits the sale of realistic toy guns. Red/orange tips or non-silver, black or blue bodies are a must. Modifying them yourself depends on your state. In NY even possessing a realistic (no orange tip for example) imitation gun is illegal.

That's for the US. Canada might be different, because I've seen airsoft guns modeled after M4's and AK-47's at San Francisco Gifts (Yeah, we have those in canada. >.<) for about $100-$150 each. No colored tips or anything.

This is primarily because the US went apeshit after 9/11 about guns... maybe even earlier than that.

But I'll be sure to keep it north of the border. :D Thanks.

It's more because of kids getting shot by cops while running around with their toys. If you see someone with something that looks like a real gun aiming at people, you don't exactly have time to find out whether it is real or not.

That's why they have those orange plastic things on the end of the guns. >_>

There are plenty of airsoft guns over here that over here that look almost real. They all have orange caps or clear plastic to show the difference. Spray paint with that non-shiny black stuff and it looks pretty close. One of my friend's brothers was shooting a movie with a bunch of airsoft pistols, and got in a bit of trouble with some police. Its not illegal, but it definitely is skirting the boundary of the law.

My friends and I play airsoft.

The gun laws in Canada are really confusing, All the big stores (Canadian tire, Wal-mart, etc...) sell clear housed airsoft guns. These are neither legal nor illegal. The orange tip law is not part of legislation here.

You can however buy a black housed airsoft gun from a CANADIAN website. Once you have one you have to be really careful cause the police may or may not talk to you about it.

IF you use an airsoft gun for recreational purposes only there is usually no problem, IF however you look like you are going to rob a store or commit some other crime using your airsoft gun, you can be charged with firearms charges.

The best place to use arisoft guns in Canada is either in your property, or at a designated airsoft field. IUf you use them in a public place you are more liable for others.
