Do they actually become unprotected after 30 mins? ie. Anyone can take your stuff?

Damn both Bunneh's and Amy's shit I've rescued from the nether for them and can't get it >.<. Well Bunneh's I didn't so much rescue as watch him get slaughtered by pigmen but same thing.
Edit: What about after the tombstone despawns? Does all the shit drop?

Well that's just stupid. Yea sure someone might steal your shit if you take too long to get there, but at least give someone else a chance to rescue it..
Edit: okay so once the tombstone despawns all the items are dropped. Bunneh I have your shit in a chest in the fire house I'll pm you the password.

Well admittedly, I may have pushed him to killing it by threatening to attack the one if I got set on fire again. So Bunneh protected himself by killing the pigman I guess. Then one fell from the ceiling on his head... and then there was just a big war. But don't worry I died enough for them to forgive us.
