Weapons/Total Conversion Idea - 'Belfast 1979'

Here's a bit of an idea for a total conversion that also has some pretty nice weapons that haven't been over-done yet...

The conversion would be called 'Belfast 1979' (because I have no imagination!)...

Basically it is a 'what if?' senario where civil war breaks out in Northern Ireland. The two main sides are an IRA led revolt against a British Army led government force.

I'll skip the background and just go on to the main mod skin lists:

1) UNIFORMS:

IRA/INLA

Basically, ballaclava helmet, camo jacket and jeans ~ you could take 'Stone' from the original GR specialist line-up and give him blue jeans.

INLA could be given black berets.

Governemnet forces:

Infantry: Maybe a 'hackle' for the Black Watch would be too dificult to model (?), so the standard grey beret of the guards regiments with DPM camo would do.
Elite: Parachute Regiment, Red beret with DPM camo.
RUC: All black police uniform.

2) WEAPONS: (The good bit):

Government forces:

ARMY:-

7.62mm L1A1 SLR (British FN FAL with solid butt, all black nylon furniture or some older with wooden stock, etc)

7.62mm L4 'Bren Gun' LMG (As far as I know, no one has modelled the Bren yet - strange as it was the best LMG ever made - better than the US BAR, more accurate and more reliable).

7.62mm GPMG (Based on the FN MAG machine gun)

7.62mm L42 Enfield sniper rifles

RUC:-

9mm H&K MP5

5.56mm Ruger Mini-14

ELITE:

5.56mm Colt AR15 (It's a little known fact that the British Army actually purchased the AR15 - later the M16 - before the US Army did!)

----------------------------------------------

'TERRORISTS' (depending on your views):

.45 Thompson 1928 (the IRA - allegedly had large stocks of the 1928s which they 'procured' in the 1930s, these were eventually replaced by the AK47/Type 56)

7.62x39mm Type 56 (basically a Chinese AK47)

7.62x39mm SA Vz.58 (a Czech design based on the AK47, but allegedly better)

5.56mm Armalite AR18

7.62mm Armalite AR10

----------------------------------------------

There you go...

Some nice weapons there - the L1A1 will be a big hit with 'Brits' (best rifle ever made!) and altough there is already an FN FAL Para already in some mods, the solid stocked L1A1 was a semi-auto only (no full auto!).

The AR18 on the other hand (and the Bren) have never been done - the AR18 was an excellent rifle, which was related to the AR15 and looked a bit like an M16 with the carrying handle chopped off, which allowed it to have lots of exotic sighting equipment fitted.

Neither has the Czech Vz.58 been done - although you might say if you've seen an AK47 you've seen a Vz.58! (...Not true...)

:)

The maps would all be urban of course (apart from the opening one which would be called 'Bandit Country' - a term given by the British Army to the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This farmland was dotted by British Army outposts and observation towers - good sniper country!).

What do you think?

Opps - I forgot to log-in (again)! LOL

...One more thing, I did want to add the 9mm Sterling sub-machine gun (British Army), but am not sure how hard it would be to model an SMG that has a magazine that comes out the side! (?)

Image

It's a superb weapon btw (I have used it) - very accurate and it had a Special Forces silenced version (used by both the SAS & SBS until replaced by the MP5).

Again - this has never been done!

...Yet!

;)

Note: Apologies, the site I got my photos from has updated and moved all the pages. I will download the images and put them on my website ASAP and reconnect the links. Sorry for the inconvinience.

Just thought I would add some more pictures of the weapons I mention in my outline above:

British L1A1 SLR - 'The Mechanical Musket'

Image

I used this in - co-incidently - 1979! It had quite a kick - such that, if you were a first time user and did not grip the rifle firmly enough, the rear iron-sight hit your eye-brow! - This led to an injury that was called 'SLR-eye', a small cut above the right eye!

;) Ouch!

British L4 'Bren'

This image shows the difference between the original .303 Bren (top) and the 7.62mmx51mm L4 conversion.

Supurb!

Armalite AR18

Not a very exciting photo of the '18'. However, the '18' saw many add-ons and one particularly nice carbine conversion. Called 'the lost AR18', the carbine had a shortened barrel with a pistol grip on the fore-stock. It was very much ahead of it's time - a pre-cursor to today's M4 family of tactical weapons.[/b]

This is an interesting idea... if you have the time, please also look into what armor was used and what antiarmor weapons. I hope no one steals the idea :)

Thanks Blade - glad you like it. For the record, it's 'public domain'.

I am not a programmer myself, so could never follow this through. So if any of you guys here like the idea and 'want it'. Just let me know and I would gladly 'gift' it to you (a credit somewhere would be nice!).

Personally I would love to have a group like 'Macgamingmods' adopt this idea as a group collaboration (Monoman on missions and MDT on models? WHo would do the maps?)

As to your question about armour:

Of course this wasn't an armoured conflict - although the British used armoured Land Rovers, APCs like the 'Armoured Pig'*, the Saracen and recce cars like the Ferret. (I will source photos for you).

Image
The good old 'PIG' - this vehicle became synonymous with the 'troubles' - usually seen on the BBC news having petrol bombs thrown at it!

(This might make a nice extra senario, where a British patrol - made up of Humbers and Ferret armoured cars - could be amushed by the IRA with RPGs. This happened, particularly in 'Bandit Country'.)

The IRA used the RPG, while the British inventory boasted the M74 LAW and the 84mm Carl Gustav (although they didin't used them as there was no armoured opposition - however, these could be included for multiplayer adversarial purposes).

The IRA & INLA did, however, make much use of car and truck bombs ~ which could perhaps be worked into a senario! :)

Excellent work! MDT will definately do it (to be honest, I LOVE it)... and you can stay around to clear up loose ends... if you find some handguns and grenades, that'd be great too. :)

Many thanks Blade. IMHO, it is a very interesting military period - often overlooked, yet produced some very interesting tactics and weapons (from both sides).

HANDGUNS:

British Army

Image
The excellent Browning - 9mm, highly accurate. Favoured by both officers and the SAS.

Intelligence units, 'plain clothes' army operatives and the SAS also used the Walther PPK (.380) as a concelled pistol.

RUC

The RUC, like other British Police services were issued with a variety of Smith & Wesson revolvers of differing barrel and frame types and calibres, .38 & .357 being the most widely used.

IRA & INLA

The Republican gunmen largly used whatever they could procure, and there was no 'standard' handgun. Many were stollen British Army/RUC handguns, some quite old - like the Webley Service Revolver:

(Will provide some grenade info later.)
