Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
Settle down... it's the fifth, so what.
Chillax, and wait for his decision.
It's not like he said he'd post today or anything. And even if he doesn't for awhile, big deal. It's a contest, to help develop creativity, skill, and experience. Sure a 'prize' for winning would be awesome... but it's about fun, and getting better.I will choose the top 3 on Aug 5th, I will post the critiques of them on the 6th and I will release the final on the 7th.
Chillax, and wait for his decision.

Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
Hey all, I'm sorry that I haven't been posting, my computer's been in the Apple store and the internet hasn't really been available. So, I apologize. I will be accepting entries until midnight tonight pacific time, at which point I'll whip up the critiques, let the finalists make final changes, and post the results on friday.
Have fun

Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
Ok here the critiques. These are the top three. All the entries were awesome, and it really came down to exactly what will be useable by the most people. I will be harsh in my critiques so as to guide your creation towards its best possible state, as you would hope any WIP thread would do.
So, in no particular order:

Jacob, nice take on the popular nebula/space theme. You brought it back down into the base colors and shapes.
a) Ditch the red background. It makes it look sloppy. Use a Black, I think
b) less radial blur. It is obvious a crucial part of the piece, but you overdid it.
c) add some depth to it, some real texture. Its really flat... I suggest adding appropriate noise or some "stars"

Perception-
nice job using a subliminal brush as a backdrop. I love the gritty gray and the teal. I also like the stripes and I like the pop that you got on the girl.
a) biggest problem: the criss-crossing stripes. Looks really ugly and it detracts from the rest of it, especially above her to the right. I would suggest making just the type and her clothing have the left to right stripe and everything else have the right to left. No need to have the glow behind her striped too, that doesn't make any sense.
b) You were clearly trying a little to hard to make her look angelic. Keep it simple, stupid! Get rid of the stars on her and lessen the glow.
c) the number one enemy of an artist working at high rez is low rez components. The brush you used behind her (stars, etc) seems have an inadequate resolution and comes across really blurry at the 1920 size. Sorry, but maybe replace it with another, bigger, cleaner one.

Monk, honestly I'm a little disappointed. You made that first one and I was like wow, awesome. It was new for you and something I hadn't seen before. Looked like an iTunes visualizer. But then you changed your entry to something similar to what you have done plenty of times before, that gritty grungy brush effect. However, as soon as I get my hands on the larger size, it is still very much a contender.
a) Different backdrop... I can't think of a situation that tan is a good background color
b) size... you know that and thats an easy fix I am sure
c) More color to it, you seems to have only used green, orange and red. Give it a splash of yellow maybe? other than that, can't think of a specific improvement other than those
Honorable mention goes to Gvn for the halo wallpaper. Made me nostalgic about when I still played Halo, when The Island first came out. Only reason its not above this is the lack of a wide appeal, it only makes any sense to those of us here. Great job!
You have until 11:59 PST on the 7th to make the final, I will post in after that. Good luck!

Thanks for the critique, and I agree completely. Just didn't get to spend a lot of time on it, and just sorta threw it together without thinking much about it.P!ckoff wrote:

Will try to revise it once more today for the final. Hopefully I can find an adequate brush. >.>

Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
I figured the grungy thing wouldn't work out. I actually deleted my old one because I've made many similar, I just have them in my wallpaper folder. Thank you for the critique!
P.S. With a desaturated layer slightly blurred then multiplied on top, this wall paper actually made for a great sig!

Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
I'm afraid I won't have time to revise my entry tonight. I just got off work a little bit ago, and am just checking a few things online, then I have to head out and get some stuff done. :<
I'll have to leave it like it is.
My apologies, and good luck to you all.

Re: Competition numba 2: Wallpapers
I was to lazy to do anything... and I don't know how to revise paint splatters... so mine is staying the way it is.
