Simple 3D weapon models

Sorry if this isn't the kind of thing intended for this forum, but I've been messing around with some very basic 3D modeling - just for some fun!

I started with a AK74M first of all, but part way through had a disaster with my hard drive and lost the file! :( This is as far as I got (colours were just for reference):-

SO - I have just started again, but this time I thought I would start with a slightly different model - the shorty AK74U. Just done the flash hider and the front sight so far...

Anyway - if this is at all of any interest to anyone I will post up my progress! (?)

Hello all! Thanks or the positive feedback...

I use Google SketchUp 6 - mainly because it's free, and because I usually use it for architectural models.

And I thought it might be a good idea to show you what the original on which the model is based - this is my airsoft electric gun (yes - sad to say I spend the occasional weekend playing at soldiers! LOL)...

Were you using an image as a guide ti help you wit the details?

Hi Devious - I could have done it that way, but as I had the actual gun at hand I just used the good old school ruler! LOL

I will probably import the photo when I get a bit more done just to check overall proportions and make sure I haven't gone wrong anywhere...

I did use the photo 'tracing' technique for this model though:

The only problem I have with SketchUp is that it doesn't have it's own render engine - you have to use third party renders. The best I have gotten out of it so far is this (which is why I am toying with the idea of trying out something like Blender or Cheetah3D):-

Blender renders things quite well, but I am not sure if it can take sktechup models.

Nah, that's quite alright. I used to have a cap gun that looked like a sniper rifle! It was awesome! I'm saving up for an airsoft M4.

I use sketchup too!

I've looked at the Blender web site a couple of time and it does look impressive. Sketchup can output in standard OBJ and 3DS files, so I guess if Blender can handle those I could import them into it and try a render.

Yes........I am embarrassed to say that at my age - 47 - I am still running around playing with toy guns. :)

I should know better - and my teenage daughters just shake their heads at me! :D

I'm gonna take a guess and say that's a full metal, rechargeable battery operated, AEG that gets around 4 rounds a second, and maybe 410 fps....

I have a full metal A4 :D It lights people up!
I <3 it.

And good job with the models, they look good.
I never really got the hang of sketchup, and I'm just now getting the hang of blender...
Tho I still suck at it :P

That pistol looks 1337.

Yeah - SketchUp is a very idiosyncratic piece of software - until you realize that it was really designed for architects to use! I mainly do buildings (for maps) so branching out into more organic or mechanical shaped models really tests the tools this program has...

I managed to get some time to myself this afternoon to do a bit more to my model - it's very slow going as I have to steal time between other projects.

I am now about ready to start on the wooden fore grip and then it's onto the receiver.

Blender is mainly for 3D artists but it has way more options then sketchup.
You really should try it.

PS: It can open OBJ models.
