Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
Hey Guys!
Yes, it has been awhile, but I have been having some problems with my laptop. After finally figuring things out, it is not running! Anyway, I was wondering if it is possible to host a game (on either a mac or windows) and let the opposite-running operating system to join. For example, I have an iBook, and my friend has a Windows Vista. Is it possible for me (or him) to host a game and for me (or him) to join it? I have a firewire cable that has worked flawlessly connecting the comoputers together and allowing for Halo to play and search for LAN games.
Since I do not have his computer here, and can't tell and experiment with his computer, does someone know? Have you tried it before and how did you get it to work? Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, you can do that as long as the game is compatible with both Mac and PC which Halo is.

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
Alright, great!
Would it be like starting up an old regular LAN game, or would I have to do anything to the IP Addresses. On the Macs, I use the "Connect to Server" command to connect the two computers, how do you do that on a Windows? Would you just find the IP for the Windows computer and connect to it through the Connect To Server command?

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
If you connect by IP, it will be the IP assigned by the LAN. So something similar to 192.168.xxx.xxx. Depending on the game, once the host comp is going, the joiners may only need to go to the LAN part of the multiplayer area and see the game listed like a normal server.

That's awesome!
Now, I heard that there may be problems if I have a newer (or older) version of Halo running than my friend's computer. Will this be a problem?

Yes, you will need to have the same versions.

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
Now, exactly, to what extent? Like, as long as we are both playing Halo as opposed to Halo 2, or to the extent that it has to be the same version as in 1.0.2?
I don't think he even has Halo, so where and how can I make sure he is getting the same "version"?

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
So I can do this with say, a vista laptop and a macbook?
Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
No. Halo Demo players cannot play with Halo Trial players online.
...
If this discussion has been talking about the full version the whole time, then it ought to be moved to the Halo forum to avoid confusion. Basically though, both of you need the full version (buy it if you don't have it) and make sure both of you have the latest Halo update installed (version 2.0.3 for Mac, and 1.08 for PC)
[edit]: You never have to use the connect to server, or direct IP, to join a game. Just create an internet game and search for it on the internet lobby (might want to sort it by server name), or if you want it to be a lan game, then just create a lan game and search for it on the lan lobby.

I am no longer active to Halo or MGM, and don't guarantee a response on the forums or through email. I will however linger around the discord room for general chatting. It's been fun!

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
Thanks for your help Monoman and nil!
II suppose I should have posted this in the Halo Full section, but my chances of someone replying there sooner than here were slim.
Anyway, nil, I was referring more to LAN play, but you covered that too, so no problem! Thanks for referring to the latest versions too, that will help me out!
We actually didn't get it to work.... He also has a really old Dell running XP, but we were unable to connect to each other's computer in order to transfer files between them (I had the Windows version of halo on my computer). We went to the run command to tried everything, but were unable to. I finally got instructions, but was still not able to. Finally, in the morning, I looked at the picture and noticed that we were typing in the IP address wrong. It needed two backslashes (\\) in front of the IP in order to connect. By then, it was too late, and we will have to try later. Luckily, I will be staying at his house for a couple of days, so we can try it them too!

Re: Mac and Windows LAN Game Play
BTW if the windows client is up to date (v1.08) you'll need UB with the latest update to play as the patch breaks compatibility with older versions and only UB is able to have the patch.
