Freeware video converter that's actually free?

Post by neko on a public computer » Sun Jul 05, 2009 10:42 am

Good luck finding one.

VisualHub can't handle any of the 24 FLVs I have, and there is not a single application I can find through Google that is actually freeware. Trials and demos and all that garbage that give watermarks and three minute limits, and applications for OS X that are really just .exe, that's not what I'm asking for.

If anyone can find a simple, FREE FLV to MP4 converter that works on an intel machine running 10.5, please let me know. One hour is enough wasted time -.-

It doesn't work, Dirk. I need something that converts, not something that takes a second to say "Finished" and have nothing to show for it :/

Handbrake is very good. I've also had a lot of success with FFMpegX. It's just a little tricky to get used to since you have to install several files to start with. It also doesn't handle certain formats it says it should.

If you have looked at VisualHub, it is just a GUI for FFMpegX.

iSquint is the free version of VisualHub. Fewer options and lower quality output. Something tells me it can't handle my FLVs any better D:

I'd have to pay to upload any of the stuff for converting, and I don't really feel like doing that >>

I forgot about that :O
Owww... 667 MHz is sloooooow... But hey, it works! Only ten hours per 20-some minute movie! XD
I think I might need a faster computer...

I didn't know that ^^
FFMpegX isn't as in your face about how to use it, and it can't convert anything to anything on my comp D:<
VisualHub is better for meh :3

So yeah. Many thanks to P!ckoff for the app that converts at less than 1 fps ^^

Well, does close to 60 fps for a high-quality 2-pass DVD on my 2.4 GHz MBP, sorry for the speed, but I think that will be a problem for any converter you find. You can also pick a different preset from the right for lower quality/ faster encodes. High quality would be Quicktime/Normal/Film while lower would be the iPod formats, etc/

HandBrake 0.9.3 can handle the movies, but 0.9.1 (the version on the fancy iMac I am now using for conversions) gives me an error D:

Yay for trying first on this POS xP

(For those who can't figure it out, I threw 0.9.3 at the iMac to make it work.)

Are you trying to convert the Flash files to put on an iPod? If not, why even convert them when you can watch them on your comp.

My computer lags to hell and back when I try to watch the episodes fullscreen and the pixelation is terrible when there's a lot going on

HandBrake > VisualHub > iTunes > iPod
Plug it into a TV and I get better picture, no lag, and awesome sound ^^

I could just watch them on the iMac, but as I said, better picture and sound on the TV x3
(And having them as MP4s that work in everything is more effective in the long run. More options :3)
