Wow...this place has changed...

Post by BRIMSTONE » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:48 am

Well, hi MGM...my name is BRIMSTONE. Some of you, the REALLY REALLY old people, might remember me.

And to all of you hotshots out there, who are about to bash me for being a noob, let me say I was modding here when we where pioneering this stuff...I was here when the first (ever) eschaton was released, and the first ever HMT was released. So let me tell you...I might be old, and out of hip with all the latest tools. But I guarantee you I know my shit.

I've made a few good mods, the only recognizable and popular one of which was AXIS mod. But thats not really why im back...more, im back to my old stomping grounds to learn how to program, and am really here to find some guidance from the older programmers here on where to begin (in so far as hacking). I mean, what languages do I need to learn? Etcetera, etcetera, and etcetera.

Post here freely, old friends and new ones looking to reminisce. It's good to be back... 8)

Welcome back, I think I remember you posting for a short time not so long ago. I'm not one for coding, so I'll leave all that technichal stuff for the others.

If you have never done programming before, and if you just want to get into programming for general sake, I recommend a language like Python. Then learning a language like C later.

If you want to want to get into creating true Mac applications, I'd consider learning C & Objective-C (a superset of C), and Cocoa. This is what me, sword, samuco, dirk, and Jonathan have used and prefer.

If you want to want to quickly get into parsing and modifying halo map files and want to make applications, REALBasic could be a quick route as it shouldn't have a difficult learning curve; it's also cross platform. This is what Modzy and Alt have used but do not necessarily prefer.

If you're interested in memory hacking, you really can't use RealBASIC, or rather, you don't want to. Also, my dynamic mods sticky has a way of writing memory mods via programming with Python.

I am no longer active to Halo or MGM, and don't guarantee a response on the forums or through email. I will however linger around the discord room for general chatting. It's been fun!

Haaaaay Brimmmmm

Python is a good place to start with programming, just to get a feel for it. But yeah Nil covered most of the other stuff....

Heya, welcome back.

I'll repeat for pointlessness what everyone else has said, and recommend Python. However, Lua and Java are both pretty accessible as programming languages, and technically you could start with a more lower-level language like C/++. Though it's all dependent on what your goal is, and nil pretty much hit it.

Though things like java, or javascripting can be pretty flexible in its application.

If you're looking to create Mac-based/only applications, I must agree with nil and company that Python is a great place to start learning the basics before diving into lower-level languages.
I personally use RB, it provides a quick and easy route to parsing files and executing algorithms. It's also cross-platform, which is the deal maker for me seeing as I am on a Mac, but most of my users are on Windows. Pearl and Eschaton are based off this language.

Back in my day we had to build our mods by hand.
